For years the Central District Health Department’s (CDHD) has been offering “Fit and Fall Proof” classes to seniors in the Treasure Valley.  Now the popular classes are coming to the Garden Valley Senior Center every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 p.m., beginning January 19^th.  Participants can join the class at any session.

The free “Fit and Fall Proof” classes teach seniors simple exercises that increase strength, balance and endurance, and can help prevent debilitating injuries caused by accidental falls and tripping sometimes associated with age.

The following notice has been published by the Central District Health Department

H1N1 Flu Vaccine Available in Boise County October 28^th

      On Wednesday October 28, 2009 the Central District Health Department (CDHD) will set up two Point of Dispensing (POD) facilities in Boise County to administer H1N1 (swine) flu vaccine to Priority Group members only.  The two PODs will be open from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at each location:

·                     Boise Basin Library - 123 Montgomery St, Idaho City

·                     Crouch Community Hall - 342 Village Circle, Garden Valley

      Vaccine supply is extremely limited.  Not all those seeking vaccine will be able to get it.  Additional PODs will be scheduled as more vaccine becomes available.

      Priority Groups are based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).  ACIP set forth guidelines for when vaccine is in short supply to target those individuals most susceptible to serious illness from the flu.  The groups include:

• Pregnant women,
• People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age,
• Health care and emergency medical services personnel with direct patient contact (i.e. diagnosing and treating patients with flu-like illness)
• Children 6 months to 4 years of age,
• Children 5 to 18 with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, lung, heart, liver or kidney disease, or are immune-compromised because of cancer treatment or HIV.

The process of going through the POD operation can be completed more quickly by downloading and filling out the Consent Form found on the CDHD website: www.cdhd.idaho.gov.

Nationally recognized Women’s Fitness Couch, Danny Russo will visit the Garden Valley Family Fitness Center October 26th.

The Garden Valley Family Fitness Center will host a presentation  focusing on Women’s health, fitness, strength training, and diet.  The presentation is geared directly towards the needs of women.  This should be a fun, informative and useful presentation.  There is no charge for admission.

If you have never visited the Garden Valley Family Fitness Center, this is a good time to tour the gym, learn about the facilities and services, and gain an insight into training specifically for your needs.

Women’s Health, Fitness and Positive Mind and Body Changes will be the focus of the Mountain Makeover Reveal.

Four Women participants have been working for months to improve their health and fitness.  On Friday evening they will reveal the success of their efforts with their improved health, new do’s, makeup and outfits.  The Mountain Makeover Reveal will be a celebration of the efforts of these women as well as a chance to learn more about making positive changes to your own health.

The event activities will include hors d’oevres, wine tasting, demonstrations, and product vendors.

Trunk or Treat

Garden Valley is a rural, mountainous community where there are few neighborhood that kids can Trick or Treat door to door.  Mom and Dad would have to drive their little goblins around the valley.  Local kids miss the interaction of Halloween celebrations in more urban neighborhoods.

Thus, the advent of Trunk or Treat, an easier, safer and more fun way for one and all to enjoy the Halloween festivities.   Adults challenge each other to come up with the scariest transformation of cars and trucks, turning downtown Crouch into a veritable “spook” parking lot.  Set up begins in the afternoon.  Festivities begin at 6:00 PM.  Bring lots of candy.  If you are really brave, you can sign up to be judge of the best car or truck costume.

Prizes will be donated by the Crouch Merc.

On October 10th from 6:00 - 9:00 PM, the Crouch Merchants are inviting their customers to Strut Down Market Street.  We are hoping this will evolve into an annual fall event.  So come join the fun and visit with friends and neighbors before they all hibernate for the winter.  This could be on of your last chances to see the snowbirds until the Garden Valley Spring Fling next April.

Follow these Home Winterizing Tips.

1. Everything and anything that is sitting outside must be stored away. Otherwise, make a map of it’s location in case you need to dig it out from under the snow.
2. Disconnect hoses from all hose bibs and bury hydrants.
3. Blow out sprinklers
4. Stack a weeks worth of firewood in close proximity to the house. Keep the bulk of your firewood away from the siding and out from under overhangs of your home. Stacked wood can attract insects and rodents.
5. Clean your chimney
6. Ask Marsha, at the Trading Post, when she expects her next order of grain scoops. They are the best shovels for our snow type. Buy one now before the rush.
7. Mount snow removal attachments on trucks and tractors or contract with a local snow removal service.
8. Reverse ceiling fans. They should rotate clockwise for winter.
9. Close foundation vents
10. Insulate any pipes that may be exposed or that are running through unheated spaces in the house.
11. Check batteries in smoke detectors.
12. Prune away any tree branches or shrubs that will get in the way of shovel.

Get out the snow shoes and the sunscreen!

Come to the Community Hall, in Crouch, on Saturday October 3th from 10:00 - 4:00. It’s the annual Fiber and Fabric Faire. Each year the Garden Valley Quilters sponsor this fun event.   Here you’ll find, not only some great quilters, but knitters, weavers, spinners and fiber artists of all kinds.

Whether you want to learn about a fiber art, find a warm and fuzzy gift for someone special, watch a craft demonstration, or take a chance to win a hand made quilt,  this is an event for you.

I look forward to the Fiber and Fabric Faire each year.  The handmade items are truly works of art.  The textures, colors and patterns are beautiful and unique.  Last year I met several women who raise alpaca, spin the wool and knit the garments.   It was great to learn about this homespun, traditional craft.

Aside from treating myself, visiting with neighbors and friends and finding some great gifts,  I had a wonderful time.

Don’t forget that, by attending the Faire, you are also contributing to the community.  Part of the raffle proceeds go the the Crouch Ambulance fund.

Twice each year, Garden Valley Properties hosts a Parade of Homes.  This event, free to the public, features homes that are available for sale.

As if Rip Van Winkle were in charge of the Garden Valley real estate market, prospective buyers have been out cold since September.

That’s all changed in the last month.  Agents are busy showing properties, scheduling upcoming visitors and BELIEVE IT OR NOT, writing offers.

It’s true that some shoppers are looking at only distressed properties.   That is not the case across the board.  Fortunately, Garden Valley has relatively few homes headed for the auction block.

What’s waking everyone up?

• Maybe folks are just tired of having their lives on hold waiting for the national news to change.
• Maybe it’s fallen interest rates that seem to be back on the rise.
• Maybe it’s the fact that buyers have rarely had so much buying power, options and selection.

Or, could it be

• The near completion of the new Garden Valley school.
• The passage of the new Library bond.
• The completion of the bike path from the school to the community park.
• The expansion of a community church.
• The upcoming new facility for the Family Medical Practice.
